google data engineer learning journey

This learning journey is designed to increase each participant's competence and confidence in order to drive superior performance in data engineering.


This program has been designed for (potential) data engineers in Opco IT teams. Enrollment is subject to approval by the candidate's CIO. As the program is given in English, a good command of both spoken and written English is essential.


The overall objective of this learning journey is to expand the participant's effectiveness as a coach through the use of great conversations, a coaching toolkit, and the provision of practical knowledge and techniques used in effective coaching. The journey provides many opportunities to practice using these tools and to receive performance feedback. 


After completing the course, students will be able to:

  • Design space analysis: Analyze the tradeoffs inherent in a cloud service design. Situate the design in the overall space. Suggest likely impacts of changes that move the design in that space.
  • Service level metrics, indicators, objectives, and agreements: Describe the difference between each and apply the appropriate type to a given design.
  • Resilience and recovery: Estimate the resilience of a design to various failures, test a service for resilience, and harden a system to make it resilient in the face of failure.
  • Latency versus consistency: Analyze a design’s trade-offs between latency when all replicas are connected versus the consistency guarantees when some replicas are partitioned.
  • Data center operating systems: Differentiate the approaches to managing the resources of a data center (which can be viewed as the operating system for a “computer” comprising the entire center). Configure a service to work with one or more of these operating systems.
  • Instrumentation: Classify the approaches to instrumenting a system. Add instrumentation to a system to make visible a hidden aspect of service performance.
  • Consensus: Summarize the need for consensus, particularly for service metadata. Differentiate the several algorithms and their common implementations. Explain the relationship between the consensus problem and consistency guarantees in the event of replica failure.

The program dates are 10, 11, and 12 February 2021.


The cost per participant is €2,400 for this course inclusive of the exam cost. This will be allocated towards the Opco of a participant. This is a 100% virtual program.
